Biographical Information

Laura Medow

Laura is a clinical pharmacist at Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center, South Bend, Indiana. She has a Bachelor Degree in Pharmacy from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science and completed a Residency in Hospital Pharmacy at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Philadelphia, PA.

A resident of St. Joseph County since 1987, Laura became actively involved with suicide prevention in 2001, working on a special project with the Community Resource Center, John McIntosh PhD, and Junior League of South Bend to enhance the Yellow Ribbon Youth Suicide Prevention efforts. Late in 2001, when the Community Resource Center dissolved its' community services, Laura founded the Suicide Prevention Task Force, which formally became know as the Suicide Prevention Council of St. Joseph County and Surrounding Areas in April of 2002.

In April of 2004, Laura was the recipient of the E. Blair Warner Award presented by the Mental Health Association of St. Joseph County for 'outstanding efforts to educate our community on suicide prevention'. In November 2005, Laura received the Distinguished Service Award from Madison Center, Inc. in recognition of 'exemplary service to improve the understanding of mental health in our community'.

John McIntosh, Ph.D.

John is Associate Dean of the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences as well as Chair & Professor of the Department of Psychology at Indiana University South Bend. A native of Northern Kentucky (Florence), he received his bachelor's degree from Western Kentucky University (1974) with a major in psychology and a minor in mathematics. He received the M.A. (1978; experimental psychology) and Ph.D. (1980, developmental psychology, specialization in gerontology) degrees from the University of Notre Dame. He has been on the faculty of Indiana University South Bend since 1979.

He is the author, co-author, or co-editor of 6 published books on suicide and has contributed chapters to several books and articles to many professional journals. He has made over 100 professional presentations and many keynote addresses at professional conferences. He also serves on the editorial boards of Suicide & Life-Threatening Behavior, Gerontology and Geriatrics Education, Crisis: The Journal of Crisis Intervention and Suicide Prevention, and Surviving Suicide (quarterly newsletter published by AAS). He is also on the national Advisory Board of the Yellow Ribbon Suicide Prevention Program.

He is a Past-President of the American Association of Suicidology (AAS; served as President in 1993-94) as well as a past member of the AAS Board of Directors. He has also served as Secretary of the AAS Board of Directors.

McIntosh was the 1990 recipient of the American Association of Suicidology's prestigious Edwin Shneidman Award (awarded to a person below the age of 40 for scholarly contributions in research to the field of suicidology) and the 1999 recipient of AAS's Roger Tierney Award for Service. McIntosh was Program Chair of the 1990 23rd annual AAS meeting in New Orleans.

McIntosh was the 1994 recipient of the IUSB Distinguished Teaching Award and the 1995 recipient of the Indiana University President's Award for Distinguished Teaching. He also received an IUSB Teaching Excellence Recognition Award in 1998. In 2000, McIntosh was selected as the 16th IUSB Eldon F. Lundquist Faculty Fellow as well as the 2nd recipient of the IUSB Distinguished Research Award.

McIntosh's work has been reported in newspapers and magazines across the country, including the Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, New York Times, USA Today, Boston Globe, Chicago Tribune, and Newsweek. He also appeared on the Phil Donahue and Oprah shows to discuss elderly suicide.
