A full day multidisciplinary conference - "Preventing Suicide: Building Competent Communities"- featuring seven nationally renowned speakers was presented on Wednesday, October 29th at the Century Center, South Bend IN by the Suicide Prevention Council of Saint Joseph County and Surrounding Areas. Mike Wallace of CBS News 60 MINUTES provided a free community presentation discussing his lifelong issues with depression on Tuesday evening October 28th at 7:30 pm on the campus of Indiana University South Bend, and hosted a breakfast meeting with physicians and nurses the morning of the conference focusing on physician-patient relationships. Target audience: caregivers (physicians, psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, nurses), educators, counselors and other school personnel, first responders (EMS, police, firemen), and laypersons, including survivors. Continuing Education Credits. Pre-conference two-day program in Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) was also conducted. For more information, visit www.sjcsuicideprevention.com After the keynote, the conference featured 2 morning plenary sessions, "Adolescent Issues in Suicide" and "Helping Survivors with L.O.S.S." The luncheon keynote reviewed "Achieving Success in Community Suicide Prevention." There were two sets of five Breakout Sessions to choose from in the afternoon: "Effective Adult Risk Assessment," "Suicide and Borderline Personality Disorder: Implications for Effective Treatment," "Suicide and Malpractice Issues," "Suicide in Older Adults," "Child and Adolescent Bereavement Services," "Impact of Suicidal Rock Music Lyrics," and "Lessons from the USAF for Public Health Suicide Prevention." |
